Shiboru Tokinenkan Siebold Memorial Museum

A museum that collects everything about Siebold, the father of modern Japanese medicine.

Siebold was a German-born medical scientist and naturalist who came to Japan in 1823 as a doctor at the Dejima Warand Trading Company. He is known for introducing Western medicine and natural history to Japan during the Edo period, investigating Japan's nature and culture from a scientific perspective, and widely introducing Japan to Europe.

It was built adjacent to the ruins of Siebold's house (Narutaki Juku ruins), a nationally designated historic site, in order to convey Siebold's great achievements to the present day.

It is a red brick Western-style building with an exterior inspired by Siebold's former home in Leiden, the Netherlands, and an entrance inspired by the home of Siebold's grandfather Karl Kaspar. Inside the museum, Siebold's life is introduced and approximately 1,500 valuable materials collected from all over the country are on display. In addition, special exhibitions related to Siebold are held several times a year in the exhibition room.
How about getting in touch with Siebold, a great man who was fascinated by Nippon and who greatly contributed to the modernization of Japan, and thinking back to the turbulent times from Edo to Meiji?

The proof of love between Siebold and Otaki

Siebold met a woman named Taki Kusumoto (Mr. Otaki) and lived in love with her in Nagasaki. It is a famous story that he named a hydrangea "Otakusa" after his girlfriend Otaki and brought it home.

The coat of arms of the Siebold family is depicted in relief and stained glass on the walls of the atrium. In the center of the emblem is a hand holding a scalpel, which is unique to the doctor's family, and it is a statue of Siebold's wife and child, which was displayed on the second floor. The same goes for the crest on Otaki's kimono, which is decorated in the same way.
Here you can get a glimpse of the depth of their love.
