Shianbashi Thought Bridge

Nagasaki's busiest downtown area, where people pondered whether to go or go back.

Shianbashi Bridge, which is close to the red-light district of Maruyama, has been used by locals and people traveling from various countries since then.
As a result, it has undergone many changes, from an earthen bridge to a wooden bridge, from a wooden bridge to a wooden bridge with a roof, and back again to its original wooden bridge.
It is said that the name of this bridge comes from the fact that many people pondered whether to go or return to the red light district, where they would otherwise waste their money.

Nowadays, the river has been reclaimed and maintained, and only the traces of the railings remain on the side of the road, but Shianbashi is still one of Nagasaki's representative entertainment districts, bustling with people.

  • Maruyama prostitutes are gorgeous! Make Kamigata cry? -3

Maruyama prostitutes are gorgeous! Make Kamigata cry?

Maruyama in Nagasaki was known as one of Japan's three major red-light districts, along with Yoshiwara in Edo and Shimabara in Kyoto.
What made Maruyama's courtesans different from those in other red-light districts was that they were allowed access to Tojin mansions and Dutch mansions (Dejima), and had interactions with Tojin (Chinese) and Dutch people.
It is said that the costumes of Maruyama prostitutes were so extravagant that it was said at the time that ``the tickets of Edo, the flair of Kyoto, and the costumes of Nagasaki combine''.
The fact that the costumes were luxurious meant that the country was very prosperous.
Many people, mainly Nagasaki townspeople and merchants from Kamigata, frequented Maruyama.
Regarding how prosperous it was, Ihara Saikaku wrote in his ``Nihon Eitaizou'', ``If Nagasaki did not have a place called Maruyama, the gold and silver of the upper region would have come safely.''
It seems that the merchants from Kamigata returned home after dropping a lot of money into Maruyama.
