Tomeizan Koufukuji Higashimeizan Kofukuji Temple
Japan's oldest Obaku sect temple
Kofukuji, which stands on Teramachi Street and has an impressive vermilion Sanmon gate, is Japan's first Tang temple and the birthplace of the Japanese Obaku sect. In 1620, a person from the Nanjing region of China built the Ma-do Hall/Buddha Hall based on a perfect circle, so it is also called Nanjing Temple.
During the early Edo period, when Christianity was banned, many people came from China, and they built Toji Temple, which became a family temple, to prove that they were not Christians and to enshrine Mazu, the guardian deity of the sea. did.
In 1632, the second chief priest, Mokusu Nyojo, built the main hall, Daiohoden. It was later destroyed by fire and a storm, and was rebuilt in 2. It is a masterpiece of southern Chinese architecture created by Chinese artisans, and boasts overwhelming beauty, with intricate carvings and arched ceilings. Mokuko Nyojo is also famous for building Megane Bridge.
The third chief priest, Itsunen, was a talented painter who brought Chinese paintings to Japan and influenced later painters. In 3, Itsuren and his friends, who longed for a high priest to come from China, invited Ingen, the founder of the Japanese Obaku sect, to become the fourth chief priest.
Zenji Ingen brought from China things such as green beans, vegetables and fruits, seals, mokkugyo, sencha tea, and fucharyori dishes, which had a great influence on Japanese culture.
There are many cultural properties and monuments within the precincts, such as the Daiyuhoden and Old Tojin Yashiki Gate, which are nationally designated important cultural properties, the Mazu Hall and Bell and Drum Tower, which are designated tangible cultural properties by the prefecture, and the Sankokaishomon Gate and Sanmon Gate.
