Chinzetaisha Suwajinja Chinzei Taisha Suwa Shrine

The guardian deity famous for the big autumn festival “Nagasaki Kunchi”

It is known as Chinzei Taisha Shrine and is affectionately known as "Osuwa-san" by the locals.
It was founded in 1625. At that time, as Christianity spread and other religions were excluded, shrines and temples in the city were often destroyed, so Kenkiyo Aoki of Hizen Karatsu requested Nagasaki Magistrate Gonroku Hasegawa to build it.
In 1632, Aoki became the first chief priest, and the festival began in 1634.

Nagasaki Kunchi, a grand autumn festival that continues to this day, is a gorgeous and exotic festival held from October 10th to 7th every year, and the votive dance has been designated as an important intangible folk cultural property of the country.

It was built at its current location in 1648, but was destroyed by fire. The shrine building was rebuilt in 1869 by imperial order of Emperor Komei. The current shrine building, which has been built twice since then, has a purely Japanese-style appearance, which is rare in Nagasaki, which has a rich exotic atmosphere.

The blessings of "Osuwa-san" are warding off evil, marriage, and protection at sea. There are many attractions within the precincts, including a unique guardian dog walking path, Ebisu/Daikoku matchmaking (love fortune-telling), and a frog rock that protects against disaster.

Let's find out more! Chinzei Taisha Suwa Shrine

  • I found a bridge railing in front of the first torii gate! -0

You can see the bridge railing in the back left.

I found a bridge railing in front of the first torii gate!

In the mid-Edo period, there was a bridge called ``Kobashi'' that led from the three steps in front of the current Ichino Torii to the next torii. Moreover, there are traces left behind.

eh? where! If you look closely around you, you will see the remains of a bridge railing. When you look under it, it doesn't seem to be flowing, but water is flowing through it!

This is a valuable ruin that brings to mind the scenery of worshipers from the Edo period. Please be careful when visiting!

Candidates should also pray to the komainu for success/A komainu for wishes that prostitutes also prayed for.

Wishing guardian dogs dotted around the shrine grounds

There are rare guardian guardian dogs dotted around the back of the shrine.
The ``Komainu'', which is prayed to by tying a rope around its legs, is extremely effective in helping people quit drinking, quitting smoking, and preventing slipping during entrance exams.

It is said that if you wash your money in the water from this well, it will double, and the ``Komainuido'' water is also said to be effective for safe childbirth.

It is said that in the past, prostitutes prayed for sailors to stay one more night when the seas were rough, and when making a wish, they would spin a stone with a guardian dog placed on it.

Kappa guardian dogs pray by pouring water over their heads, so they are always wet.

The one who pulls out the thorns in your heart is a slightly scary-looking ``thorn remover guardian dog.''

Please pick up the guide map with detailed explanations distributed at the shrine office and take a tour around the shrine to pray.
