Nakanochaya (Shimizu Kontenjikan) Nakano Chaya (Shimizu Akira Exhibition Hall)

``Naka no Chaya'' was also read in ``Nagasaki Burabura Bushi''. Garden designated as a city-designated historic site

This is where Maruyama's prostitute ``Chikugoya'' set up a teahouse in the mid-Edo period, and it was called ``Naka no Chaya.'' In addition, the Chinese people living in Nagasaki at the time named it ``Senzaiwa'', so it was also called ``Chiyo no Yado'' after this name.

Naka no Chaya, which was popular along with Kagetsurou, was sometimes used as a resting area by the Nagasaki magistrate when they inspected the city. In the folk song ``Nagasaki Burabura Bushi,'' which was created at the end of the Edo period, it reads, ``If you want to go out for fun, go to Kagetsu or Naka no Chaya.'' It was a place where literary figures and artists from both Japan and abroad liked to hang out.

This garden was built in the middle of the Edo period, and is one of the few ruins other than those of temples in the city.
In 1971, the building burned down due to a fire at a neighboring house, leaving only the garden, but in 1976, the building was rebuilt and restored to its original state. Inside the garden, there is a chozubachi dedicated by Chikugoya's prostitute, Tomigiku, and a stately old pine tree, which retains a strong vestige of those days.

The Shimizu Kon Exhibition Hall, which opened in November 2001 in the Nakano Tea House, has approximately 11 original drawings by Kon Shimizu, a manga artist from Nagasaki who is famous for his kappa drawings. Approximately 3,400 items are on display.
Many people may feel nostalgic after seeing the works that sparked the unprecedented Kappa boom, such as sake characters and sweets product names.

  • Dotted with old pine trees and chozubachi with the names of prostitutes engraved on them -1

A chozubachi carved with “Tomi chrysanthemum”

There are old pine trees and chozubachi with the names of prostitutes engraved on them.

I don't have time to go inside the building! If so, we recommend taking a stroll through the garden, which was built in the mid-Edo period and was once home to many well-branched pine trees.
The old pine trees that remain today are tall enough to look up at, giving off a great presence in the stately garden.

There is also an Inari shrine and a torii gate in one corner, and behind it is a washbasin with the word "Fugiku" engraved on it. It is said that this was dedicated by Tomigiku, who was a prostitute at Chikugoya in Nakano.
Let's experience the charm of Japanese gardens while making various discoveries.

  • Meiko Aihachi's singing voice echoes throughout the hall-2

The singing voice of famous geisha Aihachi echoes throughout the hall.

``Burabura Bushi'' sung by Aihachi, a former Maruyama geisha, is playing inside the museum.
You can enjoy Kon Shimizu's works while listening to Aihachi's delicious singing voice, or you can just sit on the verandah and admire the beautiful garden, which is one of the few remaining structures built in the mid-Edo period aside from temples. Aihachi's singing voice is the best BGM that brings out the Nagasaki atmosphere of the teahouse, which has a unique and moist atmosphere.
