The height of Nishikawa Joken Nishikawa Nyomi's grave

City designated historic site

Nishikawa Nyomi (1648-1724) was commonly known as Jiroemon, gave his first name Tadahide, and went by the pseudonym Kyurinsai.

At first, he studied Confucianism under Nanbu Soju, but later studied astronomy and calendrology under Kensei Kobayashi, and was known as Japan's leading astronomer at the time.

It is said that in 3, Shogun Yoshimune especially summoned Joken and listened to his opinions on astronomy and calendars, which he used as a reference.

He has written many books, including ``Enlarged Book of World Geography,'' which is said to be Japan's first book on world geography, ``Japanese Water and Earth Study,'' ``Character Map of the 42 Kingdoms,'' and ``Tenmon Giron,'' as well as a topography of Nagasaki. Nagasaki Yawagusa, also known as Nagasaki Night Stories, is a transcription of Nyomi's discourses by his son Masakyu (Chūjiro).
