Daionji Daionji Temple
One of the three major temples in Nagasaki
Daionji Temple is said to be one of the three major temples in Nagasaki, along with Kodaiji Temple and Honrenji Temple.
Behind the main hall, which has an impressive chalk wall, there is a ginkgo tree that is about 300 meters tall and is considered to be over 20 years old and is designated as a natural monument by the city.In addition, there is a large Japanese blackberry tree that towers beside the stone steps leading up to the main hall. There is a large tree in this temple that is so big that you can look up at it.
Because the area has deep connections with the Nagasaki Magistrate, there is also the grave of Yasuhide Matsudaira Toshoto, the Nagasaki Magistrate who took responsibility for the Phaeton Incident that occurred in 5 and committed suicide.
This is a large five-wheeled pagoda that has been designated as a historic site in Nagasaki City.
In addition, at Goyama Cemetery, which is up the stairs next to the main hall, is the graveyard (city-designated historical site) of Sotaro Araki, a red seal ship trader who was active from the end of the 16th century to the beginning of the 17th century. Here lies Wakakutome, the daughter of the royal family Nguyen, whom Sotaro took as his wife from Vietnam and who was affectionately known as "Anio-san" by the people of Nagasaki.
