Sotome no Shitsushuraku Shitsu village in Sotome

A village in the Sotome region on the west coast of the Nishisonogi Peninsula

During the period when Christianity was prohibited, a small group of Hidden Christian believers worked together to secretly pass on sacred paintings, doctrinal books, church calendars, and other information, and continued their faith on their own. After the ban on Christianity was lifted, the religion was divided into those who gradually returned to Catholicism and those who continued with the form of faith that had existed during the ban (hidden Christians).

In 1882, Father de Rotz built Shitsu Church on a hill overlooking the village. This symbolizes the end of "hiddenness" in the Shitsu village.
