Takashima University Hankyuutaku Akiho Takashima's former residence
A nationally designated historic site located in Okumaruyama where the atmosphere of the Edo and Meiji eras remains.
This is the villa of Akiho Takashima, who was famous as a gunner at the end of the Edo period.
The Takashima family was a famous family that inherited townships from generation to generation. Akiho's father, Shigeki Takashima Shirobei, built this villa in Higashikojima-cho. It was called ``Reishoken'' because of the old pine tree that stands in the garden, and ``Useirou'' because on rainy days you could hear the sound of the Kojima River.
The Takashima family had a main residence in Omura-cho (present-day Manzai-cho), but it was destroyed in a fire in 1838, and they lived in this villa ever since.
Akiho learned the Ogino style of gunnery from his father, purchased cannons, bullets, guns, and other weapons from the Netherlands, and studied Western gunnery. His report, which emphasized the necessity of reforming our national military system, caught the attention of Tadakuni Mizuno, a senior councilor.
In 1841, a Western-style gunnery exercise was held at Tokumarugahara (present-day Takashimadaira, Itabashi Ward, Tokyo), and Akiho received a reward from the shogunate, but the following year he was arrested for a crime he did not commit. After he was released after 12 years, he served his country.
Akiho spent the time from gunnery exercises at Tokumaruhara to his capture in this villa.
In 1945, the Amusei Tower was severely damaged by an atomic bomb and destroyed, but the remains of the site include bullet holes, stone walls, earthen walls, wells, and night lights that show the remains of cannon fire.
