Misaki's Kannonzenji Misaki Kannon Zen Temple
A temple boasting a history dating back to the Heian period
Entsuzan Kannon Zen Temple, a Soto sect school located on Wakimisaki, on the western edge of Nagasaki City, was founded in 709 when the famous monk Gyoki erected a statue of Kannon Bodhisattva. It is the oldest temple in the suburbs of Nagasaki City and boasts a rich history. The current building was rebuilt during the Edo period. This area was once an important trading port for crossing to China, so it has remained open since then.
It was originally a Shingon sect temple built at the end of the Heian period, and its principal image is the wooden standing statue of the Thousand-Armed Kannon (Mokuzo Senju Kannon), also known as the ``Misaki Kannon,'' which is a nationally designated important cultural property. It is about 2 and a half meters long. Since ancient times, there have been many pilgrims from Nagasaki, and there is a 28km road called ``Misakimichi'' that leads from Juninmachi, which is adjacent to the ruins of Tojin Yashiki, to Kannon. Then I paid a visit to Kannon. A stone monument marked "Misakimichi" still remains.
Evidence that the people of Nagasaki visited the shrine during the Edo period can be found in the shrine grounds, including stone lanterns donated by Nagasaki townspeople, the drum in the main hall, and the temple bell. It has been. In addition, the main hall has 150 ``ceiling paintings of flowers,'' and ``flower and bird paintings'' by Nagasaki artists Yuushi Ishizaki and Keiga Kawahara are designated as tangible cultural properties by the prefecture. It has become.
