Large eel giant eel habitat
The giant eel that lives on Kabashima is surprisingly large.
The giant eel is a tropical fish that is distributed along the Pacific coast from Okinawa to Ibaraki Prefecture, and can grow to a length of about 2 meters.
In Nagasaki Prefecture, it is rarely found in the rivers of the Goto Islands and Nishisonogi Peninsula, and has lived in the communal wells of Kabashima for a long time. It is believed that young whitebait eels entered the well from the sea, and only one of them grew large enough to become the owner of the well.
It is highly valuable as the northernmost habitat for the tropical fish giant eel, and in 1923 Kabashima's well was designated as a national natural monument as a habitat for the giant eel.
"The owner of the well" has been living there since before it was designated as a natural monument, but the first generation was when it was designated in the Taisho era, and it appeared naturally until the sixth generation, but the seventh and eighth generation The same species of giant eel caught in other areas was kept in the well. Since the eighth generation died in 1, the eel has not been kept in the well, but there is a tank nearby where you can observe the giant eel.
