After Glover Bet Glover Villa Ruins
Glover House, which was also located in Takashima
This is a Western-style villa built in 1868 (Keio 4) by Scottish trader Thomas Blake Glover. In the early Meiji era, Mr. Glover built a bridge on this land, which was once a small island separate from the main island of Takashima, and engaged in the development of the Takashima coal mine, using this villa as a base for managing the mine. The telephone line that ran from here to Minami-Yamate's home in Nagasaki is said to be Japan's first private telephone line.
Currently, there is a bronze statue of Mr. Glover and an explanatory board, as well as an observatory with a triangular roof, and you can see the foundation stones of the building and the ruins of a well. You can take a walking path down to the pier where ships were once docked.
Mr. Glover made great achievements in Japan from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. While looking out at the ocean from this quiet villa surrounded by pine forests, he must have filled his heart with big dreams and expectations about Japan's modernization.
