The last coal mining island in Kyushu
Ikeshima, the last coal mining island in Kyushu that closed in 2001, is a small island located 30 km off the coast of the Sotome district of Nagasaki City, about 7 minutes by ferry from Kounoura. Development of an undersea coal mine began in 1952, and commercial coal production began in 1959.
Later, the area of coal mining expanded to Hikishima Island, about 3 km away, and the mine developed into a gigantic submarine coal mine with a total length of about 90 km. However, due to price competition with foreign coal and the energy revolution, it became difficult to maintain business, and the company ended its 42-year history.
Currently, it is the only coal mine facility in Japan where you can ride an electric trolley and experience a coal mine tour led by a former coal miner guide. (Reservations are required for the Ikeshima Coal Mine Experience Tour.)
Additionally, there are many coal mining-related facilities remaining on the island, which you can tour while taking a leisurely stroll.
Be sure to visit the site of the coal industry that supported modern Japan's growth period.
