stomach Onakao rice terraces
Beautiful rice terraces selected as one of Japan's top 100 rice terraces
The Onakao rice terraces, selected as one of Japan's 100 best rice terraces, are located along the Kounouragawa River, which has been selected as the clearest stream in Japan.
There are about 8 rice fields on an area of about 450 hectares, and you can see the Sumonada Sea from the top. The rice terraces, surrounded by nature, offer spectacular scenery in each season.
It is said that the land was cultivated by the Omura feudal lord during the Edo period, and a waterway stretching approximately 4.2km from the upstream of the Kamoura River was also built to bring water to the rice terraces. Because there is no water source nearby, the Oide Channel is still in use, and local people and volunteers clean the channel every spring before the water starts flowing.
In addition, for the first time in Nagasaki prefecture, a ``rice terrace owner system'' has been adopted, and rice planting and harvesting are carried out together with people from outside the area. Events such as photo contests are also held, and at the fire festival held after the autumn harvest, about 6,000 lighted bamboo lanterns line the path, creating a magical scene.
