Shitsubu Kamura: Nagasaki Shiso and Merekishi Minzoku Shiryokan Shitsu Bunkamura: Nagasaki City Sotome History and Folklore Museum

A museum that conveys the history and culture of the Sotome area

In the Sotome district of Nagasaki City, there are the Shitsu Ruins, a sand dune site dating from the Jomon period to the Yayoi period, the Miyata Tumulus Group, dating from the Kofun period, and kitchens made of talc stone used from the end of the Heian period to the Kamakura period. The ruins of a workshop for making stone pots, which were used as ingredients, and the medieval Kounoura Castle ruins remain. In addition, various valuable materials such as the history and culture of Christians under the rule of the Omura and Saga clans in the early modern period can be seen.
The museum exhibits materials on the history of the Sotome area from ancient times to the present day, as well as the lifestyle and industries of the past. In addition to excavated items such as earthenware, stone pots, and tools made under the guidance of Father de Rotz, you can get a glimpse of the history of this area through a wealth of materials related to the hidden Christians.
Panels also introduce Father de Rotz's life and achievements, as well as the history of the Ikeshima Coal Mine, which was closed in 2001.
