Yamazato school Yamazato Elementary School

The disaster occurred approximately 600 meters from the hypocenter, and approximately 1,300 children lost their lives.

This is an active elementary school located in the Urakami area, but during the war, it was a three-story reinforced concrete school building that was completely destroyed by the atomic bomb, leaving only the first and second floors, as it was located approximately 600 meters north of the hypocenter. As the school district was located at the epicenter of the explosion, the damage to children was severe, and approximately 3 of the approximately 1 children lost their precious lives. It is assumed that many of the children died at home, as they were on summer vacation at the time.

Currently, the school houses the Atomic Bomb Museum and the ruins of an air raid shelter, which are the remains of the atomic bombing. There is also a plaza called ``Anno Children's Hill,'' which is a peace zone where people pray for lasting peace. After the war, peace education continued and became established, promoting learning including the atomic bomb remains scattered in the Urakami area, and continuing to pass on the baton to pass on the preciousness of peace to future generations.

The song "Ano Ko" (lyrics: Dr. Takashi Nagai, music: Fumio Kino), which is sung at the memorial service for the atomic bomb victims on August 8 every year, was created with the feeling of mourning for the children who lost their lives in the atomic bombing. It's a song.

In the spring, the slopes below the school gate are lined with cherry blossom trees that bloom beautifully, creating a calming atmosphere for the people passing by. This cherry tree was donated by Dr. Takashi Nagai, and this slope is called ``Nagaizaka''.

Air raid shelter ruins where teachers and children evacuated

In order to protect lives from intense air raids during the war, 18 trenches were dug into the cliffs inside the school and served as evacuation sites for the school and people living nearby.
The ruins of that air raid shelter are now the ruins of the bombed area.
On the day the atomic bomb was dropped, many teachers who were working on digging new air raid shelters were crushed to death by this cliff.
In addition, teachers, children, and people nearby who were injured by heat rays and radiation were evacuated to air raid shelters, but many died there.
The only remains of the air raid shelter remain on the cliff behind the current school building, which was a playground at the time of the atomic bombing.

Cenotaph for the victims: ``Those Children's Monument''

There is a small hill on the left after entering the main gate called "Anoko no Oka".
Dr. Takashi Nagai compiled the notes of the children at Yamazato Elementary School and published ``Living Under the Atomic Cloud'' in 24. He consulted with the children who wrote the books and shared part of the cost of the manuscript. The cenotaph ``The Children's Monument'' is built here.
This cenotaph was built because the children agreed with Dr. Takashi Nagai's idea that a cenotaph should be built to console the spirits of the children, teachers, and families who died in the atomic bombing.
The words ``The Monument of Those Children'' engraved on the stone next to the cenotaph are written by Dr. Takashi Nagai.
