Dondon Zaka Dondon Slope

``13 slope scenery selections'' A photogenic slope with a panoramic view of Nagasaki Port

Dondon Slope, a stone-paved slope with an exotic scent that overlooks Nagasaki Port, was selected as one of Nagasaki City's ``Top 13 Slope Landscapes.'' The rain-soaked cobblestones look even more beautiful.

Located in a quiet residential area of Minami-Yamate near Glover Garden and Oura Cathedral, the narrow, long, straight slope is so steep that once you start walking, you won't be able to stop. On both sides of the old Western-style stone pavement, the beautiful red brick "Maria Garden" and several Western-style houses still exist, giving it a very exotic atmosphere with strong traces of a foreign settlement.

There is a drainage ditch called a triangular ditch on the side of the slope, and in order to adjust the speed of the water flow, the shape of the ditch changes from U-shaped at the top of the hill, V-shaped at the middle, and rectangular at the bottom to smooth the flow. Efforts have been made to do so. When it rains, the rainwater makes a thumping sound, which is why it is commonly known as ``Dondon Slope.''

From the top of the hill, you can see the wide blue sky and the unique view of Nagasaki, which is a bowl-shaped mountain surrounded by Nagasaki Port. The view from dusk to night is spectacular, with the illuminated Nagasaki Shipyard and the World Heritage Site Giant Cantilever Crane shining brightly. It's a quiet and relaxing spot that only those in the know know, and you can enjoy the night view at your leisure.

On the hills of Minami-Yamate and Higashi-Yamate, which used to be foreign settlements, there are still remnants of triangular ditches made of two flat stones arranged in a V-shape, and terraced side ditches.
This type of groove has the advantage of allowing rainwater and waste to easily drain away.
The triangular ditch is also called the Dutch ditch, but it is a Portuguese-style or Dutch-style ditch, or it is thought that there were ditches of this type on high ground from the time the settlement was created, so it was invented by foreigners living in the settlement. It is also said that this may be the case.
Similar gutters can also be seen in Dejima, Hirado, where a Dutch trading post was located before Dejima, and Takashima off the coast of Nagasaki Port, where Glover's villa is located, so either way, it can be said that it is a product of foreign culture. Sho.
