Maruyama Orandazaka Maruyama Dutch Hill

This is the original Dutch slope

At the end of the train street in front of Sofukuji Temple, you will find ``Maruyama Oranda Slope'', which is lined with narrow stone steps leading up to Maruyama. In Nagasaki, foreigners other than Asians were once called "Holland-san," and all the slopes that "Holland-san" passed were called "Holland-zaka."

There are two theories about the origin of the name "Maruyama Oranda Slope". The first is the road that many Dutch people living in the settlement took during the Meiji period to go to Fukuya, a Western restaurant that opened on a small island in the upper part of Maruyama (near Nakakojima Park), passing through Maruyama's red-light district. The theory is that he often walked along this slope, which was easily accessible. The second is that during the period of national isolation, when the Maruyama prostitutes, who were the only women allowed to enter and leave the country, went to the Dutch trading post (Dejima), they passed through this inconspicuous slope along the river that was flowing at the time (near the train street). There is a theory that he boarded a small boat and went to the island. In other words, the theory is that it came from the hill that the Maruyama prostitutes who went to the Netherlands (at the time, went to and from the Dutch Trading Post) passed through.

Both of these hypotheses are appropriate for this quiet townscape, and the scenes of the time seem to come to mind. Of course, this is a story from the Edo period, before the settlements were built. In other words, this is the original Dutch slope.

Jizo statue that fulfills the wishes of passersby

There is a Ichimonji Jizo statue on the path that extends from Maruyama Oranda Saka to the old Mogi Kaido.
In fact, from the Meiji period to the early Showa period, there was a small blacksmith shop called Ichimonji Tekkosho in this area, supplying hoes and spades to nearby farmers.
The Jizo statue that has been placed here since those days is a guardian deity for passersby. It is said that it often makes wishes come true, and even today you can see people who pass by putting their hands together.
I'm sure all the Maruyama prostitutes and Maruyama geishas were joining hands!
