Daitokuji Koen Daitokuji Park
A park named Daitokuji even though there is no temple
This famous phrase is said to be one of the Seven Wonders of Nagasaki and is still used today as a folk song, ``Daitokuji Temple, even though there is no temple.''
Daitokuji was abandoned in 1868. Although the name Daitokuji still remains, it is now a popular green park with Umekozaki Tenmangu Shrine and Kusunoki Inari Shrine.
Inside the park, there is a huge camphor tree that is estimated to be 800 years old and has been famous for a long time as the ``Great camphor tree of Daitokuji'' and is a designated natural monument of the prefecture.
Located on a spacious and well-ventilated hill, it was said to be one of the most scenic spots in Nagasaki at the time, overlooking Nagasaki Port. It is said that Maruyama prostitutes also frequented this place for relaxation.
At Kikusui, a long-established restaurant in the park that was founded in the early Meiji era, you can enjoy Daitokuji yakimochi, which has a taste that hasn't changed since ancient times.
