Umezo no gawaritenmanguu Umezono Sakari Tenmangu Shrine
The guardian deity of Maruyama town, connected to Aihachi, the main character of the novel “Nagasaki Burabura Bushi”
Umezono Mikawari Tenmangu Shrine is the guardian deity of Maruyama-cho, a red-light district in Nagasaki that was once one of the three major red-light districts along with Yoshiwara in Edo and Shimabara in Kyoto. Founded in 1700 by Jiemon Yasuda, it has been affectionately known as ``Substitute Tenjin'' since ancient times, and has been loved as a spiritual haven for prostitutes and geishas.
The reason why it is called "Sacrifice Tenjin" is that one night in 1693, the town official, Jiemon Yasuda, was attacked by a man, stabbed in the left side with a spear, and carried to his residence. However, strangely, there were no injuries anywhere, and instead, the statue of Tenjin that had been enshrined in his home was found lying on the ground, bleeding from his left side. It is said that after the incident, Lord Michizane Sugawara stood at Jiemon's bedside and told him to enshrine Tenmangu Shrine.
The shrine grounds are full of unique lucky charms such as the ``Umezuka'', the ``Pasted Cow'' that prevents blurriness, and the ``Ebisu stone'' that is said to make your smile more beautiful. One of the most eye-catching is the ``Toothache Guardian Dog.'' It is said that if a person with a toothache puts starch syrup in the mouth of the guardian dog, it will act as a substitute and relieve the pain. It is packed full of candy.
It is also a shrine that is associated with the Maruyama geisha Aihachi, the main character of Nakanishi Rei's novel ``Nagasaki Burabura Bushi,'' which he often visited, and a monument inscribed with Nakanishi Rei's calligraphy has been erected here. .
In February, the shrine is colorfully colored with plum blossoms, which Michizane loved, and in November, the annual festival ``Nagasaki Maruyama Flower Festival'' where the courtesan (courtesan) parade is so gorgeous that it feels like the whole town has been transported back in time to the red-light district era. It seems like.
