Simmering Zaka Toro Toro Slope
Exotic slope of the old Nagasaki Kaido
An arch-shaped stone bridge is located just upstream of the Narutaki River from the Shin-Nakagawa-cho tram stop. This wonderfully constructed bridge is the only bridge connecting Sakurababa to Ichinose (currently Hotaru Chaya), and was built in 1654 and is designated as a tangible cultural property by the city as a Furubashi. The gentle slope that continues from Furuhashi is called "Toro Toro Slope". Is it a sloppy slope because it's a gentle slope so you can walk slowly? The true origin is unknown.
Toro Toro Slope is an exotic stone pavement paved in the Jiangnan style of China's Qing Dynasty three years before the opening of Nagasaki Port in 1571. Later, both sides of the road were paved during road widening work, so the current width is the same as that at the time. The cobblestones remain only in the central part. Along the slope are Nakagawacho Jizodo and Nakagawa Hachiman Shrine, which are dedicated to Jizo statues and Kobo Daishi, and the atmosphere of the area as the gateway to the Nagasaki Highway still remains.
