Okinoshima Kyokai Okinoshima Church

A chalk church with echoing prayer bells

Okinoshima Church is an impressive Gothic-style church that can be seen as you head towards Mt. Tomidake from Iojima Port.

Approximately half of the island's residents are devout Catholics, and prayer bells echo in the morning and evening.

Temporary and main cathedrals were built in 4 and 1871, but damage from lightning and typhoons made repairs impossible, and the current building was completed in March 23. . It was named the Basilica of Archangel Michael.

It was damaged by a large typhoon in 3, and the exterior was repaired the following year, and in October of the same year, it began to be illuminated at night (1991:10 p.m. to 18 p.m.).

Its appearance, shining in the quiet night of Io Island, is a symbol of Io Island. You can also tour the inside of the temple if you wish.
