Seifirippokyokai (Nishizakaki Kyokai) St. Philip's Church (Nishizaka Church)
Japan's Sagrada Familia?! A unique building that combines faith and architecture
Nishizaka Park is home to reliefs of the 26 saints who were martyred on Nishizaka Hill (Monument to the XNUMX Japanese Saints). Adjacent to it is the Church of St. Philip Nishizaka, which has two eye-catching towers.
The name of this church comes from Felipe de Jesus, one of the 1 Saints. It was built based on donations from Felipe's home country of Mexico and designed by architect Kenji Imai. Mr. Imai is known as the person who introduced the famous Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi to Japan in the early Showa period.
Mr. Imai, who is a Catholic himself and was deeply impressed by Gaudi's architecture, incorporated many of Gaudi's architectural elements, such as the piety that glorifies martyrs, using mosaics of colorful ceramic shards.
The interior of the church is based on white, and the soft light that filters through the stained glass creates a gentle atmosphere.
Because it is located in a very important place in the history of Japan and has a unique design that takes that history into account, it has been designated as a Landscape Important Building by Nagasaki City.
