Shindenan Shindaan
A traditional Japanese garden and tea room dating back to the Edo period
[news]
Shindenan will be closed until the end of March 2025 for facility maintenance. During the closure period, the facility will not be open to the public or available for rental.
This is a villa built in Nagasaki Katabuchi-go (present-day Katabuchi 1628-chome) by Gacho Shin, the eldest son of the Chinese residential architect Gakozai, who came to Nagasaki in 5 (Kanei 2).
In 1658 (Manji 1682), Hechojin became the Emperor of the Tang Dynasty and is also known for donating the main hall of Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Nagasaki (a nationally designated important cultural property) with his father, Takagi. Shinda-an has a history of being valued in Nagasaki's tea ceremony, and materials such as the 2 (Tenwa 1817) ``Shinda Anki'' and the 14 (Bunka 2013) ``Shinda Anzu'' remain. It was designated as a Nagasaki City Historic Site in 25 as a historical and cultural heritage that should be inherited by Nagasaki City.
The garden and thatched building are open to the public for about 20 days each spring and fall. In the spring, you can enjoy the dazzling fresh greenery, and in the fall, you can enjoy the elegant scenery of the changing colors of the leaves and the trees with their annual rings. Isn't it fun to feel the spirit of our ancestors in the hermitage and garden that have been around for nearly 400 years?
The thatched roof building (Japanese-style room and tea room) and garden are also available for rental outside of the period when they are open to the public.
