Takashima Tankou Hockey Seikouato Takashima Coal Mine Hokukei well ruins
Japan's first steam engine shaft
In response to the increased demand for coal as fuel for steamships with the opening of ports at the end of the Edo period, it was developed through an investment project between Thomas Blake Glover (Glover & Co.) and the Saga Domain.
Glover invited British engineers to build the Hokkei well, the first Western-style shaft in Japan to use a steam engine, reaching a depth of 43 meters and is said to have produced 1 tons of coal per day. After that, it was sold to Shojiro Goto and operated until 300.
The Hokkei well pit site has well-remained remains of the shaft and other structures thought to be related to steam engines, giving us a glimpse of what it was like in the early days of modern coal mining.
