Nagasakirekishibunkahakkubutsuban Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture
Let's learn using all five senses! History and culture of overseas exchange in early modern Nagasaki
A unique hands-on museum that restores and exhibits the historic Nagasaki Magistrate's Office in the Edo period Nagasaki Suwa Forest.
The restored magistrate's office, designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa, and beautiful white walls, surrounded by fine stone walls, and the main building with a black gable roof are a fusion of Japanese architecture and modern architecture, and are truly art! It seems that some of the buildings are still being used as they were from the Edo period that were excavated.
The theme of the museum is "History of Overseas Exchange in Early Modern Nagasaki." It houses and exhibits approximately 400 valuable historical materials, arts and crafts, and ancient documents that tell the history of overseas exchange spanning approximately 81,000 years, and is a research base for Nagasaki studies.
The permanent exhibition also introduces Nagasaki's unique culture, focusing on the history of trade with foreign countries, Christianity, and exchanges with Korea. The museum is designed to help you learn about the flow of Nagasaki's history up close, with an experience corner where you can learn using all five senses, such as puzzles, a hands-on experience making traditional crafts such as stained glass, and powerful multi-screen videos.
At Ohakushu, located in the Nagasaki Magistrate's Office Zone, where the roof tiles, fittings, and sliding doors have been faithfully restored, skits performed by a volunteer theater troupe that recreate the court proceedings at the time are very popular! The ``Criminal Book'', which is a record of court cases, and the ``Fumie'', which are important cultural properties, are on display.
We hold various special exhibitions and events every season, so both children and adults can enjoy learning about history without getting bored.
