Nagasaki Rekishibunka Hakubutsukan Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture

Let's learn using all five senses! History and culture of overseas exchange in early modern Nagasaki

A unique hands-on museum that restores and exhibits the historic Nagasaki Magistrate's Office in the Edo period Nagasaki Suwa Forest.

The restored magistrate's office, designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa, and beautiful white walls, surrounded by fine stone walls, and the main building with a black gable roof are a fusion of Japanese architecture and modern architecture, and are truly art! It seems that some of the buildings are still being used as they were from the Edo period that were excavated.

The museum's theme is "The History of Nagasaki's International Exchange in Early Modern Times." It houses and exhibits many valuable historical documents, art and craft items, and ancient documents that tell the story of Nagasaki's 400-year history of international exchange, and serves as a research base for "Nagasaki Studies."

The permanent exhibits introduce Nagasaki's unique culture, focusing on its history of trade with foreign countries, Christianity, and exchanges with China and the Netherlands. There is an experience corner where you can learn using your five senses, such as puzzles, a traditional crafts making experience, and powerful images on a multi-screen, allowing you to learn about the flow of Nagasaki's history up close.

The Nagasaki Magistrate's Office Zone is a faithful reproduction of the Nagasaki Magistrate's Office Tateyama Office, which once stood in this location, and displays Christian-related materials such as the Hankacho, which are trial records, and the Fumie, an Important Cultural Property.

We hold various special exhibitions and events every season, so both children and adults can enjoy learning about history without getting bored.
