Nagasaki Shirekishi Minzoku Shiryokan Nagasaki City History and Folklore Museum

Adjacent to the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, this museum exhibits mainly Nagasaki archaeological and folklore materials.

Nagasaki City has prospered through overseas exchange, and has passed down unique customs and annual events that are heavily influenced by foreign cultures. The Nagasaki City History and Folklore Museum has a large collection of these folklore and historical materials.
In addition to excavated archaeological materials such as stone tools and pottery, and folklore materials such as agricultural machinery and local toys, there are also exhibits of materials related to China, Portugal, and the Netherlands that have ties to Nagasaki.
Among these, the Nagasaki embroidery created in the late Edo period is of stunning beauty and is a must-see exhibit.
In the hands-on learning room, you can not only look at the materials, but also touch and use them, allowing you to truly feel the history of Nagasaki firsthand.
It is located inside the Peace Hall near the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. Please come and experience the unique history and culture of Nagasaki, which flourished through the fusion of Japanese, Chinese, and Dutch cultures.

"Kanbun Nagasaki Folding Screen" depicting Nagasaki in the latter half of the 17th century

You can see what “Nagasaki Kunchi” was like at that time!

Particularly noteworthy on the first floor are Christian relics such as the Kurusu brought by the Portuguese, and Western pottery imported from the Dutch, which were recently excavated from the private residences of influential people in Nagasaki and show how people lived at the time. It's an expensive exhibit.

Also worth seeing is the ``Kanbun Nagasaki Folding Screen,'' which depicts the cityscape of Nagasaki in the late 17th century and the autumn festival ``Nagasaki Kunchi.''
Not only can you understand the topography of Nagasaki at the time, the state of trade, festivals, customs, and the lifestyle of Nagasaki people brought about by trade, but you can also understand the location, such as the name of the town at the time, and the items on display can be seen point by point. Connected together, you can understand the history of Nagasaki as if it were a single line.

A dog drawn on a Nanban folding screen?

``Nanban Byobu'', painted in 1591 by a painter of the Kano school, who prospered as an official painter of samurai families from the late Muromachi period to the Edo period, depicts a Portuguese ship entering the port of Dejima.
The scenes of the time are depicted in great detail, including the Portuguese, missionaries, southern servants, rooms hung with imported animal skins, and scenes of drinking parties with prostitutes known as ``bound to Holland.'' It's interesting. And among them, you can even catch a glimpse of a Western dog!
Twenty years after the port opened, we can confirm that dogs were coming to Japan as early as the Portuguese trade era.
