Flower culture of Nagasaki
``Nagasaki Maruyama'' was once hailed as one of the three major entertainment districts along with ``Yoshiwara of Edo'' and ``Shimabara of Kyoto.''
Nagasaki Kenban, located in Maruyama, conducts rehearsals for geisha and arranges and supervises the tatami rooms. A two-story wooden building that is over 100 years old is located on the left side of the gate of Kagetsu Restaurant after passing through Shianbashi Bridge into Maruyama. The eaves of this quaint building, which was once a red-light district, are lined with red lanterns with the names of geishas written on them.
Geishas (geikoshu) perform at long-established restaurants in Nagasaki, as well as at tourist events and other events. In addition, dances are sometimes performed at the autumn festival ``Nagasaki Kunchi''. As the bearers of Nagasaki's traditional culture, they practice hard every day and show off their honed skills.
Sometimes you can hear the elegant sound of a shamisen coming from the building. If you're lucky, you might see geishas in kimono walking towards nearby restaurants in the evening.
*It is not possible to tour the inside. To invite geisha to your tatami room, please contact one of our affiliated restaurants in Nagasaki City.
