current situation Former Izutsu Rescue House
A vocational and welfare facility established in the early Meiji era by Father de Rotz, who invested his personal funds to help villagers in extreme poverty.
This facility was established in 1879 by Father de Rotz, a French missionary who was assigned to the Sotome region in 1883, as a workshop to support women's independence. Here, techniques such as weaving, sewing, and food processing were taught, and various activities were carried out to improve people's lives and serve as a base. In addition to the main building of the rescue center, the teaching center, there is a factory for making macaroni, a sardine net factory (currently Father de Rotz Memorial Hall), and a masonry wall built using Father de Rotz's unique construction method. It is adjacent to the wall (commonly known as ``De Rotz Wall'').
Part of the facility has been designated as a national important cultural property as the remains of a valuable vocational and welfare facility from the early Meiji period.
In order to convey the thoughts of Father de Rotz, who devoted his life to Sotome and is still admired by the people, in addition to facility tours, there are now opportunities to experience cooking and farming. There is also a cafe-restaurant called Vossroll, which shares the same name as Father de Rotz's hometown, and serves home-cooked meals, homemade bread, and home-grown herbal tea.
