Nagasakishii Oujimatodaikinenkan Nagasaki City Iojima Lighthouse Memorial Hall (Iojima Lighthouse former staff retreat)
A valuable cultural heritage from the early Meiji period! Japan's first Western-style unreinforced concrete house
The Iojima Lighthouse Memorial Hall, made of Western-style unreinforced concrete, was opened in 1988 as a memorial museum in a Western-style house that was formerly used as a staff retreat (official residence for lighthouse staff).
It is a Western-style house from the early Meiji era with a veranda with seven columns in front. Each room has a mantelpiece, which is essential in the cold northern part of Io Island in winter, and the number of rooms and floor plan are in keeping with the period. It is an extremely valuable cultural heritage in terms of architecture, unlike any other retreat site.
The Iojima Lighthouse became unmanned due to automation, and after being designated as a tangible cultural property by Nagasaki Prefecture, it was repaired and restored to its original appearance.
Inside the museum are information such as ``Tomidaiba and Iojima,'' ``Changes of Western-style lighthouses,'' ``History of Iojima lighthouse,'' ``Changes in light sources and light equipment,'' ``Meiji lighthouse retreat and Iojima lighthouse retreat,'' and ``People related to Iojima lighthouse.'' Approximately 6 items are on display under six themes: ``and literature''.
The area around Iojima Lighthouse has been developed as a park, with an observation deck and cafe. The sunset seen from here is spectacular, making it a popular photo spot on Iojima! You can enjoy a relaxing time while looking out at the vast ocean.
