  • Old well from the church era called Gedoi-0

Gedo well and marble stone slab

An old well from the church era called Gedoi

Among the remains of the church era, there is an old well from the Christian era called ``Gedoi'' on the left side of the front garden of Daihikaku, which is adjacent to the main hall.
And there was only a single marble stone slab placed beside it.
This marble was excavated from beneath the floor during renovation work behind the main hall in the early Showa period, and is thought to have been used as an altar in the church.

Since Zen meditation is often held at Shuntokuji Temple, it is best to call ahead before visiting the Gedoi well.

  • A magnificent cemetery on the mountain behind Shntokuji Temple-1

Prefecturally designated tangible cultural property: Tomb of Tokai

A magnificent cemetery located on the mountain behind Shntokuji Temple

If you visit Shuntokuji Temple, be sure to visit the Tokai Cemetery, which has been designated as a tangible cultural property by the prefecture. The Tokai family had served as messengers to Tang Dynasty for ten generations, and must have been quite wealthy. The five-tiered tomb is magnificent, considering it took several years to complete. There are a total of 10 tombstones on the vast grounds, and even a stone pillar with a lion's head on it.

This lion's head originally had gold eyes set in it.
It shines brightly in the setting sun, and is said to have been used as a landmark for Chinese and Chinese ships entering Nagasaki.
However, it seems that the centerpiece was stolen at some point.
