Heiwa Koen (Heiwaki Nenzo/Heiwa no Izumi) Peace Park (Peace Statue/Peace Fountain)
A space of prayer for the repose of the souls of the atomic bomb victims and for lasting peace.
The Peace Park, located on a small hill on the north side of the park where the atomic bomb fell, was built as a vow to never repeat a tragic war and a wish for lasting world peace.
The peace statue symbolizes the desire for peace of the citizens of Nagasaki. (Height: 9.7m Weight: 30t Material: Bronze Creator: Mr. Seibo Kitamura)
The creator is a sculptor from Nagasaki, and this statue symbolizes the love of God and the compassion of Buddha. The right hand pointing toward the sky represents the threat of the atomic bomb, and the left hand stretched horizontally represents peace, while the statue is lightly closed. The eyelids symbolize the desire to pray for the souls of the atomic bomb victims.
Every year, August 8th, the day of the atomic bombing, is designated as Nagasaki Peace Day, and a peace prayer ceremony is held in front of this statue, and a declaration of peace is made to the whole world.
"Peace Fountain" (Diameter: 18m)
The survivors, whose bodies were burned to the core by the atomic bomb, died groaning and crying out, ``Water, water!'' This circular fountain was built by collecting donations to pray for the souls of those suffering souls by offering water to them, and to pray for lasting world peace and the abolition of nuclear weapons. It was completed in 1969 (Showa 44) and is located in a corner of Peace Park, in front of the Peace Statue.
A stone monument inscribed with a note written by a girl who wandered in search of water after being exposed to the atomic bombing is set up in front of the building, giving a somber picture of the devastation of the time.
Fountains shaped like peace doves and crane feathers dance, and on the eve of the peace memorial ceremony, many candles are lit and events are held to remember the victims.
