Fukusaiji Fukusaiji Temple

A temple characterized by the ``Bankoku Mausoleum Nagasaki Kannon'' that watches over the city of Nagasaki

Fukusaiji Temple has a huge Kannon statue as its symbol. It is a venerable temple of the Obaku sect, which together with Kofuku-ji, Shofuku-ji, and Sofuku-ji, is called ``Nagasaki Shifuku-ji.'' It is said to have been one of the largest Toji temples in Nagasaki, and before the war it was designated as a specially protected building, which is now a national treasure.
However, it was destroyed by the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki. Today, the Bankoku Mausoleum Nagasaki Kannon, built to pray for the repose of the souls of the atomic bomb victims and war dead, quietly overlooks the city of Nagasaki.
The statue of Kannon that stands on top of the turtle-shaped mausoleum is 34 meters tall, and you will be surprised by its impressive size.
Additionally, the Fukusaiji Tang Monk Cemetery located within the Fukusaiji Cemetery is a designated historic site by Nagasaki City.

The symbol of Fukusai-ji Temple, which was reborn as a modern temple after the war, is the standing statue of Kannon, which shines in silvery white and can be recognized even from a short distance.
This Kannon statue is more accurately called the Universal Mausoleum Nagasaki Kannon, and was erected in 54 to commemorate the spirits of the atomic bomb victims and war dead and to pray for peace.
The Jibo Kannon that stands on top of the mausoleum is 34 meters high and weighs 35 tons, so large that if you look at it up close, you will be overwhelmed by its impressive size.
On the other hand, when you are casually passing Chikugo-dori in front of Fukusai-ji Temple, you may suddenly see a statue appear between the private houses, which makes it all the more enjoyable.

Before the war, Fukusai-ji Temple was blessed with a spectacular view, and it was a temple with seven halls (garan/garan = Buddhist temple layout) that contained national treasures and auspicious Buddhist statues.
However, it was completely destroyed by the atomic bomb. In the temple grounds, there remains a bell that was destroyed along with the Shichido Garan in the atomic bombing, and was deformed by the heat and pressure, with one ear burnt off. The cloud plate that was exposed to the atomic bomb is said to be a national treasure and a relic from the Fukusaiji era.
