Nagasaki Shinchi Chuugai Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown

Enjoy gourmet food and shopping in Japan's three major Chinatowns!

Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown is one of Japan's three major Chinatowns, along with Yokohama and Kobe.
It is a popular tourist spot with easy access, arriving in less than 10 minutes on the tram from JR Nagasaki Station. It was built by reclaiming land from the sea in the mid-Edo period to build a warehouse for trade goods from China.

Approximately 250 stores, including Chinese restaurants, Chinese sweets, and Chinese miscellaneous goods, are lined up along the crossroads, which is about 40 meters long from east to west and north to south.

How about eating cute-looking Chinese sweets and braised manju while enjoying the exotic cityscape?
Nagasaki's famous ``champon'' and ``sara udon'' have unique flavors at each store, so we recommend trying them out and comparing them!
Chinese grocery stores have a wide variety of products, including ingredients directly imported from Shanghai and Hong Kong, so you'll have fun choosing souvenirs.

At the Lantern Festival held every winter, approximately 15,000 lanterns (Chinese lanterns) decorate Chinatown in a fantastical manner. In addition to regular lanterns, large artistic lantern objects are also on display, making it a sight to behold! You can also enjoy authentic Chinese dance and performances of traditional musical instruments at the special venue. The event originally started as a Spring Festival to celebrate the Lunar New Year, but now it has become a popular event that is known as a winter tradition in Nagasaki.

    [History of Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown]
When the Chinese ships entered the port, they carried cargo into a warehouse on the coast, but it was destroyed in a large fire in 11.
In 15, the coast was reclaimed to create a built-up island and a warehouse was built in order to facilitate the import and removal of trade goods, protect the goods from fire and theft, and prevent smuggling. It was called Shinjigura.
From the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji period, the Tojin mansions were abolished, so the Chinese residents moved to this area, and now there are Chinese restaurants and Chinese souvenir shops, forming a unique Chinese town in Nagasaki. .
There are four vermilion-painted Chinese gates at the north, south, east, and west entrances; the east gate has a blue dragon, the west gate has a white tiger, the south gate has a Suzaku, and the north gate has Xuanwu (snakes and turtles), representing the god of direction. Featuring Chinese legendary animals.
Currently, the only building that reminds us of Shinjigakura is a stone monument erected at the crossroads in the center of Chinatown.
At the back of the lobby of Hotel JAL City Nagasaki in a corner of Shinchi Chinatown, part of the relocated Shin Jizo seawall from the Genroku period (1699-1702) stands quietly.
