Katrikku Magome Kyokai Catholic Magome Church
A church built on Okinoshima by believers who endured Christian persecution and preserved their faith.
The beautiful chalk Gothic Catholic Magome Church (Archangel Michael Cathedral) stands on a hill on Iojima (Okinoshima). More than half of the residents are still Catholic, and the church is a symbol of the island.
During the Edo period, when Christianity was banned, Christians who temporarily took refuge by boat to escape the severe oppression of Christians crossed the sea from Amakusa and other places, arrived at Iojima, and settled there.
Believers who desperately endured persecution to protect their faith joined forces and built a temporary church in 1871, the wooden tile-roofed Shiiyama Small Cathedral. In 1873, the banning tag was abolished and Christianity was tolerated. Later, as the number of believers increased, a full-fledged wooden and brick stucco church was built in 1890, designed by French Father Marman.
Unfortunately, however, it collapsed due to lightning strikes and two typhoons, so in 2, the current reinforced concrete and tile-roofed cathedral was rebuilt, with a statue of St. Michael the Archangel hanging above the front altar. Father Magoshiro Matsuoka appealed to the whole world, and the church, which was completed through the tireless labor and service of the faithful and the donations of many people, is now a registered tangible cultural property of the country.
The contrast between the white of the church built on a hill and the blue of the sea is beautiful, and it is lit up at night, creating a particularly majestic atmosphere.
