Nagasaki Koshibyo Chugokureki Daihakubutsu Nagasaki Confucius Shrine Museum of Chinese History

Japan's only authentic Chinese-style mausoleum with magnificent traditional beauty throughout

The Nagasaki Confucius Shrine began as a place to enshrine the belongings of Confucius, the founder of Confucianism known for his Analects. It was built in 1893 (Meiji 26) by the Qing Dynasty government and overseas Chinese, and has undergone several renovations since then to reach its current state. The beautiful traditional Chinese architectural style temple is decorated with rich colors, and as soon as you step into it, you will feel a solemn space amidst its splendor.

The Dacheng Hall, which houses the largest seated statue of Confucius in Japan, and the stone statues of the Seventy-Two Wise Men, each of which has the same face, create an impressive and majestic atmosphere.
The attached Chinese Historical Museum constantly exhibits valuable cultural artifacts that are considered national treasures and are held by museums from all over China, including the Beijing Palace Museum. In addition, the historical museum exhibits related materials and many famous items owned by the Nagasaki Confucius Shrine. It's a great place to learn about Confucius and the Confucius Temple.

"Henmen" is a traditional Chinese performing art whose trick is considered a state secret. Nagasaki Confucius Mausoleum has two henmen masters who perform their traditions at events and other events. Various ceremonies and festivals are held throughout the year, and it is crowded with many visitors.

  • 72 sage statues lined up in marble-0

72 wise men with rich expressions

72 sage statues lined up in marble

Once you pass through the formal inner gate of the main temple, known as the Gimon, you will find stone statues of the 72 sages, the disciples of Confucius, lined up all the way to the main hall, Taiseiden. All of these are made of marble and weigh approximately 1.5 tons.
It is said that it took two years to arrange them in their current position. Each one wears costumes that match their role, and their facial expressions and movements are completely different, so take a close look.
Don't forget to find your favorite sage and take a commemorative photo.

  • There is a lot of “China” on the roof that is often overlooked -1

Fukurokuju, one of the Seven Lucky Gods

There is a lot of “China” even on the roof that is often overlooked.

When you pass through the gate and look back, you will see Fukurokuju in the upper center of the gate, inviting good fortune!

Additionally, above the roof, the uniquely beautiful curved roof and roof tiles imitating bamboo are characteristics of Chinese architecture.
On the roof, you can see the brave figures of dragons, phoenixes, and giraffes.

Furthermore, I found a white pigeon under the plaque with Taiseiden written on it!
Although Confucius lived in a slave-based society, he preached the idea that those who wanted to pursue learning did not care about their social status.
In other words, this pigeon was also listening to Confucius' lecture.
Let's also take a look at the roof.

  • Ayaka and pray for success! -Four

A prayer card for passing the exam

    Ayaka and pray for success!

There is a prayer talisman dedicated to Confucius, the god of learning, which is given out free of charge to those who wish to purchase either incense or candles sold in the Seiden/Taichengden Hall, which enshrines Confucius. This extremely valuable item was obtained from the Confucius Temple in Qufu, Shandong Province. It is said that it has already gained a secret popularity among some examinees, perhaps following in the footsteps of Confucius, who studied hard to become a high-ranking official or politician.
If you are working hard on your studies, you should definitely get it.
