The former British Consulate of Nagasaki is a massive two-story red brick building facing Oura Kaigan Dori. Based on a design by William Cowan, a British engineer from Shanghai, it was constructed in 2 by Kametaro Goto of Oura-cho, Nagasaki City, and completed the following year.

In 1858, after treaties of amity and commerce were concluded with foreign countries, Nagasaki became an open port and began free trade, diplomatic affairs began, and a consulate was established. The British Consulate in Nagasaki has been relocated several times, and used the building at its current location from 1886 to 1906, but it was demolished due to its age, and construction on the current building began the following year. is.

The main building is a two-story brick building, with balconies on three sides: the front and both sides of the first and second floors. The design takes into account the façade, with round windows in the exterior walls at both ends and granite accents on the walls and arches on both sides of the first floor.

The entire site, including the main building, annex, and staff housing, as well as gates and walls, has been maintained in its original condition, and blueprints and specifications have been preserved. As a Western-style building from the latter half of the Meiji period, it is valuable in terms of form and design, as well as in terms of history and scenery. In addition, it has high value as a document that shows part of Japan's modern diplomatic history, and was designated as an important national cultural property in 1990.

Due to its aging condition, it is currently undergoing conservation and repair work and will be closed until 2025 (scheduled).
