Higashiyama City Bank Higashiyamate 12 Bank Building (Former Settlement Private School History Museum)

A nationally designated important cultural property that exhibits historical materials related to many private schools built during the settlement period.

Higashi-Yamate 1868 Bankan, a stylish cream-colored Western-style building built on top of Dutch Hill, was built in 1988 and is the oldest remaining building in the Higashi-Yamate area. It is a Western-style building that represents a foreign settlement, and was designated as a national important cultural property in XNUMX.

Initially, it housed the Russian Consulate, but later was used as housing for the American Consulate and Methodist (Women's Foreign Mission Society) missionaries. Remains of the consulate's time can be seen in the wide veranda that emphasizes the view of Nagasaki Port, the wide hallway in the center of the front, and the three spacious rooms.

In 1941, it was transferred to the Kassui Gakuin educational corporation and used as a classroom, but in 1976 the building was donated to Nagasaki City, and in 2005, the ``Former Settlement Private Education History Museum'' opened. Private schools are schools (mission schools) established by Christian groups for the purpose of proselytizing in countries with many pagans, and many mission schools were built in the Higashi-Yamate area during the Meiji period.
In addition to introducing the history of the mission school, the museum also displays furniture, cupboards, etc. used by the missionaries. There are many benches, so we recommend taking a break and enjoying the atmosphere of the Western-style building.

In fact, the former Fujima family residence, located right next to Higashiyamate 12 Bank Building, is also a Western-style building built in the early Meiji period.
It is a small house with two large and small rooms arranged on the front side, and its biggest feature is that it does not have a balcony. The south entrance uses the same corbel as the 2th building, and the residence of the consular staff, etc. It is assumed that it was an annex building.
In addition, in the back is the two-story wooden Katsusui Alumni Hall office built in the late Meiji period.
Since entry is prohibited, it can only be seen from the outside, but it has a very distinctive exterior, with one side of the living room facing the balcony having a semi-octagonal shape and the other side having a circular bay window.
The living room facing the balcony has windows on the entire surface despite being in a position where the afternoon sun shines through.
It is impressive that it was built with the view as the top priority.
It is currently used as a guest accommodation facility for Katsumi Jogakuin.
