Orandazaka Holland Hill

The stone-paved slopes of the Higashi-Yamate area, a remnant of a foreign settlement and filled with an exotic atmosphere

It is a stone-paved slope in the Higashi-Yamate district, which is lined with Western-style houses and has an exotic feel.
In Nagasaki, the only area of trade in Japan during the Edo period, non-Oriental people were still called "Dutch-san" even after the country was opened, perhaps due to the influence of the Dutch living in Dejima. For this reason, it is thought that at that time all slopes in foreign settlements were called Dutch slopes, meaning ``the slopes that Dutch people pass through''. Currently, the slopes below Katsusui Women's University, Katsumizuzaka, and the slope in front of Seikoin Temple are mainly called Oranda Slope.

Higashiyama Tekou Jusanbankan, a light blue Western-style building near the Oranda Saka stone monument, is a place where you can easily stop by and get in for free. This building was used as a residence for foreigners during the Meiji period, and you can see the interior and furnishings to see what it was like back then. There is also a cafe space, so why not take a break during your walk?

    Dutch slope in the rain

Dutch slope in the rain that looks wet and picturesque

Especially in the case of Nagasaki, tourists seem to tolerate it even when it rains, thanks to the big hit song of yesteryear called ``Nagasaki wa It Rained Today''.
In fact, the cobblestone pavements that dot the streets of Nagasaki, not just Oranda Saka, become even more beautiful when wet with rain.
The rain-soaked Dutch slope is a beautiful scenery that remains in the hearts of many people.
