Nagasaki Shikyu Honkonshan Nagasaki City Former Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Nagasaki Branch Memorial Hall

Nagasaki modern exchange history and Sun Yat-sen/Umeya Shokichi Museum

The Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank established an agency in Nagasaki at the end of the Edo period, shortly after the port opened, and opened a Nagasaki branch in 1892. This museum is housed in the former Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Nagasaki Branch, which was built in 1904 as the new company building and is a nationally designated important cultural property. The ``Nagasaki Modern Exchange History and Sun Yat Sen/Umeya Shokichi Museum'' is located on the 2nd and 3rd floors.
The three-story stone building was built in the typical Western style of "facade architecture," with a richly decorated front and simple sides. It was designed by Kikutaro Shimoda, a genius in the architectural world who was active from the Meiji period to the early Showa period. This is the only work that still exists in Japan. It is one of the largest Western-style buildings remaining in Nagasaki City.

The first floor is a multi-purpose hall where you can casually use for a break, as well as exhibits that show what it was like back then when it was used as a bank. The story of the cross-border friendship of businessman Shokichi Umeya and the activities of overseas Chinese people in Nagasaki are introduced. On the third floor, there is an experience corner where you can have fun and learn about the history of the trading port of Nagasaki, the Shanghai route and international communications that played a major role in the modernization of Japan, the lives of foreign merchants in the settlement, and the architect Kikutaro Shimoda. Introducing our achievements.

This Western-style building, designed by Kikutaro Shimoda and built by bringing together all modern architecture, stands facing Nagasaki Port and has long been a part of the scenery for bands. The second and third floors of the facade are four pillars called the Giant Order, and like the Ionic and Doric style of the former British Consulate, it is a large Corinthian style colonnade that is important in Greek art. The capitals of the columns are decorated with beautiful acanthus leaves. Also pay attention to the Greek-style decorations called antifixa and acroterion that can be seen on the roof!
The grandeur of the front of the building is a Western-style building that gives you a sense of the era and passage of time when it was first built, and how it was designed with the eye of the people on board the ships entering Nagasaki Port in mind.

Therefore, the ``Society to Protect the Former Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank'' was immediately established. This building, which is the remains of the Nagasaki branch of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, overcame the threat of demolition by collecting signatures from 10 Nagasaki residents through a citizens' movement to preserve the building. After about four years of conservation and restoration work, it opened in 4 as the Nagasaki City Former Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Nagasaki Branch Memorial Hall.
