Enter the mine and experience coal mining!
If you have children, I actually recommend Ikeshima. You can experience coal mining by riding a mine cart and feeling like a miner!
This is a coal mining island where you can land, tour the ruins, and even experience being a miner on a trolley!
While Gunkanjima has many off-limits areas due to the risk of collapse, Ikeshima has not been closed for long and is still an inhabited island with around 100 residents. After walking around admiring the coal mining facilities that remain as they were at the time and the many abandoned apartment buildings, you can board a trolley train and head to the coal mine! The one-hour tour is full of excitement, as you listen to the guide in the cool air of the former coal mine and experience operating actual coal mining equipment. If you choose the optional course, you will be guided to the houses and apartments built in the off-limits areas.
1. There are abandoned apartment buildings on the island that remind us of the island's bustling past.
2. Board the green trolley train and enter the mine with a guide who actually worked at Ikeshima Coal Mine.
3. Helmets and cap lights required for entering the former coal mines are available for free rental.
4. Don't stick your arms or legs out of the mine cart! Let's embark on a mine adventure!
5. When touring the restored coal mining site, you can get up close and personal with the giant roadheader!
6. Learn about the history of Ikeshima Coal Mine through rare photographs from when the mine was still in operation.
7. You will be walking inside the mine, so wear comfortable shoes and clothes.
8. The remains of the emergency center inside the mine. A glimpse into the harsh working conditions of the miners.
9. Apparently they inserted this dynamite (replica) and detonated it.
