200 marks the 2023th anniversary of Siebold's first visit to Nagasaki. We have launched a new "Siebold Botanical Cycling Journey" to allow people to experience the city from Siebold's perspective. Tour Nagasaki from the perspective of observing plants with Siebold's "Flora of Japan," a magnifying glass, and an electric bicycle! The illustrations in Flora of Japan were created by Kawahara Keiga, Siebold's personal artist. The intricate yet soft illustrations are also noteworthy.
I am a guide for ROUTE BIKE & TOURS, which organizes the Siebold Botanical Cycling Journey.

Siebold was a German physician and naturalist who is known for introducing Japanese nature and culture to Europe. When he arrived in Nagasaki as a doctor for the Dutch trading post at Dejima, foreigners were not allowed to leave Dejima, but Siebold was given special permission to practice medicine in the city and opened the Narutaki School. Nowadays, the Siebold Memorial Museum, which collects everything about Siebold, is located nearby. The wide range of exhibits, including the Flora of Japan (a botanical illustrated book that introduced Japanese plants to Europe), the Siebold Incident, and his lifelong involvement with Japan, are well worth seeing. Plants related to Siebold are planted at the site of his former home, a nationally designated historic site next to the museum, and in June, beautiful hydrangeas soothe visitors. Hydrangeas are the flowers that Siebold introduced in the aforementioned Flora of Japan as Hydrangea otaksa. Siebold's love for the flower is apparent in naming it after his wife, Otaki-san, for its graceful blooming. The road from the site of Siebold's house to Shindaikumachi Shopping Arcade is named "Siebold Street," and is lined with temples, shrines, a quaint river, and historic privately owned shops.

The museum also has a section that displays the state of Japan and the world at the time Siebold arrived in Nagasaki.

The site next to the Siebold Memorial Museum was where Narutaki School was located, where students from all over Japan were taught. ThisThose who studied there later became doctors and scholars.
