100Uniting for the year-long festival
-First of all, please tell us about the relationship between the two of you and the Nagasaki Lantern Festival.
Mr. Tsunekawa
It has been over 25 years since I first served as the event MC for the Nagasaki Lantern Festival. At that time, the only event venue was Minato Park, but later on the Tojin Yashiki and Central Park venues increased, and events began to be held at Kofukuji Temple. Currently, 11 MC members are in charge of emceeing each venue. We liven up the venue with performances of musical instruments, singing, acting, and more, and as tens of thousands of people visit during the event, we make every effort to keep the event safe and prevent accidents.
Mr. Sissy
He first appeared in2004It's the year. I originally belonged to a Peking Opera orchestra in Shanghai, China, but my interest in Japanese culture led me to study abroad at a graduate school in Nagasaki. In a band, you play with a large group of people, so you go out by yourself and play the erhu (note: a traditional Chinese folk instrument).2It was a refreshing feeling to play the ``string'' (played with a bow held between the strings of a book). At the Nagasaki Lantern Festival, we not only perform, but also sing, direct, and compose, so it's a valuable stage where you can freely express what you want.
Mr. Tsunekawa
Sissy's performance has been highly complete since the first year she took the stage, and I thought she was an amazing addition. At the time, Sissy-san was still studying Japanese, and I remember that on stage I acted as an interpreter to communicate to the audience.
Mr. Sissy
We will perform not only traditional Chinese songs, but also a wide variety of songs, including famous Japanese songs, popular songs, and my own original songs. If you choose songs that match the atmosphere of the venue that day, the audience will be excited, which makes you even more happy. The erhu is a traditional instrument, but I want to make it more popular among the younger generation, so I try to play new songs as much as possible. I can see the audience's faces from the stage, so I'm secretly happy when I realize, ``That's the person who came last year, too.''
Mr. Tsunekawa
It's was so. I understand how you feel (lol). Both Sissy and I have been involved in the Nagasaki Lantern Festival for over 20 years, and what we look forward to every year is the encounters and interactions we have in various situations. Everyone in Chinatown, the bustling town, and the tourists visiting the area are all kind, and the entire town is filled with a happy atmosphere. The management members also have a sense of unity as they all work together to finish the event safely. The number of visitors has increased year by year, exceeding 2013 million in 100. It has become established as a major winter tourism event. With the motto of ``making it a festival that lasts for 100 years'' that will be passed on to the next generation, we are all working together to carry out activities that are 100 years in the future.
Mr. Sissy
Although we only get together once a year as we each have our own activities, we have a deep bond. I hope that everyone who visits for sightseeing can feel even a little bit of that warm atmosphere. We are happy to be able to get off to a great start at the Nagasaki Lantern Festival at the start of the year, which is the Chinese New Year.
Enjoy the Nagasaki Lantern Festival with all five senses
- Please tell us about your own unique way of enjoying events.
Mr. Tsunekawa
On the first day, we always pray at the altar of Seki-tei-sama in Minato Park, the main venue. On the altar, there are pig heads with tails stuck in their foreheads, which is proof that a whole pig was used as an offering. Afterwards, I walk around the lantern venue's shops, Tojin Yashiki, Hamaichi Arcade, etc., and try to get a feel for the atmosphere of the venue and town with my own eyes. There is advance information, but as the MC, I am conscious of incorporating that impression into the talk.
Mr. Sissy
I enjoy delicious street food during my free time from performing on each stage. We recommend the piping hot grilled xiaolongbao sold at Central Park! I've loved grilled xiaolongbao ever since I lived in Shanghai, so I often buy them as presents or as souvenirs. I ate whale cutlet for the first time at a food stall at the Nagasaki Lantern Festival. I think one of the attractions of Nagasaki is that while walking around town, you can encounter Nagasaki-style gourmet food in various places.
Mr. Tsunekawa
A major change in lanterns is that in recent years, the lighting has changed to LED. The lights have become very gorgeous, and the variety of colors has increased from red to yellow and peach, making each venue even more magical.
Mr. Sissy
One piece of information that you would like to know is that during the period, there will be an experiential event called ``Candle Prayer Tour of the Four Halls'' that will take you to the four halls of Toshin-do, Tenko-do, Kannon-do, and Fukken Kaikan. I newly composed and performed the BGM that is playing. I would like you to listen to and compare the songs created to match the characteristics and history of each temple.
Mr. Tsunekawa
The ``fantastic scenery'' where the vortex of light from lanterns lively colors the whole city is wonderful, but the stage events include an erhu performance by Sissy and dragons dressed in Chinese costumes.20Events such as the ``Dragon Dance'' where a meter-long dragon body is manipulated, the ``Ryukyu Festival Taiko Eisa'', and the traditional Chinese performance ``Henmen Show'' will be held at the Nagasaki Confucius Hall, so sightseeing visitors can enjoy the festival to their heart's content. I hope you enjoy it.
Mr. Sissy
The appeal of the Nagasaki Lantern Festival is that it can be enjoyed with all five senses. I usually hold an erhu class in Nagasaki City, and it is also a place for the students to give presentations. In 2024, a performance with about 70 students is scheduled to take place in Central Park, and everyone is practicing hard to prepare for the sunny stage.
Beautiful lights while feeling the culture and history of the town
- Please give a message to those who are planning to visit the Nagasaki Lantern Festival or who are considering traveling there.
Mr. Tsunekawa
Approximately 15000 lanterns will be displayed at each venue and in Nagasaki City during the event period, so please enjoy the beautiful lights. During the Lantern Festival, the last day of the Lunar New Year, many red candles are lit at Tang Mansion and Sofuku Temple. The solemn and calm atmosphere is different from other venues, so be sure to take a look at the fantastic lights of the main red lanterns, the pink lanterns that decorate the Doza River, and the yellow lanterns around Megane Bridge.
Mr. Sissy
Nagasaki, where various people and cultures have come and gone since ancient times, is home to Japan's "wa" and China's "wa".flowerThere is a ``Waka orchid culture'' that has been developed through the interaction of the ``orchid'' and the Dutch ``orchid''. This is reflected in the townscape, for example, on the road from Minato Park near Chinatown to the Confucius Temple, there is the famous Dutch Hill and Western-style buildings. I don't think there are many places where you can enjoy so many different views so close together, so I hope you'll enjoy walking around the town during the event period, which is decorated with beautiful lanterns.
Mr. Tsunekawa
And on February 2024, 2, it has been decided that Masaharu Fukuyama, a singer-songwriter from Nagasaki, will appear as the emperor in the Emperor Parade!
Mr. Sissy
I'm really happy that Mr. Fukuyama will appear in the role of the emperor. I have heard that the parade will run from Dejima to Dejima Messe Nagasaki as a special edition of the Emperor's Parade.
Mr. Tsunekawa
The "Emperor Parade" is an image of the Emperor and Empress going out into the city together to celebrate the new year with the people during the New Year of the Qing Dynasty, as well as the "Emperor Parade," which was actually held by the crew of the Chinese ships that entered Nagasaki port during the Edo period. There are so many events that take place in the city, such as the ``Mazu Procession,'' which is a reenactment of the procession that takes place to enshrine Mazu, the god of safe navigation, in the Mazu hall of a Tang temple. . Let's all get excited about the Nagasaki Lantern Festival, which will be held in full for the first time in four years.
Mr. Sissy
I agree. I would be happy if I could meet many people in Nagasaki.
