Shoro Nagashi spirit sink
Traditional obon events in Nagasaki
This is a traditional event held on August 8th every year for the bereaved families of those who passed away before Bon Festival to mourn the spirits of the deceased. It is a symbol of Nagasaki's Bon scenery, where handmade boats are paraded through the city and sent off to the Pure Land of Paradise.
The boats built by each family are mainly made of materials such as bamboo, boards, and straw, and come in a variety of sizes, with the family crest, family name, and town name written in large letters on the long protruding prow. A distinctive boat is built by decorating it with the hobbies and preferences of the deceased. Yacht boats are put out at community gatherings, and in August you can see many half-built boats on the streets, each with elaborate decorations.
On that day, at dusk, the sound of the bell ``Chang Kong Chang Kong'' and the chanting ``Doi Doi'' can be heard from all over the town, the deafening sound of firecrackers rings out, and the procession continues until late into the night.
