Takegei Bamboo art

Enjoy the inhuman acrobatics of two young men wearing the masks of a male fox and a female fox, who serve as messengers of the shrine.

This is an event dedicated to the Autumn Festival at Wakamiya Inari Shrine, where acrobatics that originated from the traditional Chinese Arhat dance are performed. It is said that the statue depicts male and female foxes, the messengers of the shrine, playing happily in the bamboo thicket behind the shrine, delighted by the divine virtues of the shrine.

The real thrill of this event is the acrobatics performed by two young men dressed in white costumes as a fox and a fox on two green bamboo trees over 2 meters high, accompanied by flute, shimedaiko, and shamisen music. Starting with the adorable tricks of an elementary school little fox, the two foxes perform a series of bold moves such as handstands, combination tricks, and fox jumping! Just watching it makes the audience's heart flutter, and the feeling that chills their souls fascinates the audience. When the female fox throws lucky rice cakes, the audience cheers, and at the climax, the male fox releases a chicken into the air. In between the performances, there are one highlight after another, and there is no time to catch your breath as the audience cheers and cheers.

It is an event that has been cherished since the Edo period and has been designated as a nationally selected intangible folk cultural property (city intangible folk cultural property).
