Chugokubone Chinese Bon Festival

``Boruurabonshoe'' is a Bon festival to comfort the spirits of the dead.

In the past, in order to console the spirits of the dead, it was held at a Tojin mansion jointly by three temples: Sofukuji, Fukusaiji, and Kofukuji, but now it is held at Sofukuji for three days starting from July 3th in the lunar calendar. It is now done.

This Bon festival is officially called ``Boruurabonshoe,'' and a puja is held at the same time for Buddhas with and without ties.

On the first day, monks chant sutras to console the spirits of Buddha and other venerable figures, and on the second day, they chant sutras to call out the dead and spirits.

On the third day, offerings are made to the spirits of the whole world, and in order not to cause mischief to those who have strayed, they burn gold mines, silver mines, clothes mountains, etc. and throw rice buns toward the sky to send the spirits away.

Kanayama and Ginzan mean gold and silver coins, and Koroyama means kimono, clothes, footwear, etc.

The dolls located at the second gate (first peak gate) after passing through the first gate of the precincts are Chie (a short man with a round black face) and Pee (a tall man with a long face and wearing a white coat). )It's called. These two are gods whose role is to take human souls to the underworld.

In front of the main hall are a panoramic entertainment room, bathing room, women's room, and ballroom.

This tamaden was built for the dead, and Buddhist vegetarian food is offered inside, and incense smoke is constantly swaying.

Furthermore, next to the main hall are 36 shops for the dead in the underworld, where the dead can buy things and play.

At night, many red lanterns are lit up in the temple grounds, and the sounds of Chinese guns, gongs, and drums resound all the time.

Pilgrims from as far away as the Kansai region join in, and Chinese men and women of all ages, dressed in full costume, kneel and bow (the Chinese way of worshiping) and raise their hands. The entire mountain is covered in incense smoke, creating a very lively scene.
