Nagasaki Tourism Dragon Dance Festival
The Nagasaki Tourism Dragon Dance Association was established in 54 mainly by people involved in the tourism industry in order to contribute to the development of tourism in Nagasaki City. We participate in various events such as promoting tourism and welcoming conventions, and sometimes travel outside the prefecture to perform the traditional performing art of Nagasaki, the Dragon Dance. For details, please refer to "Appearance Status".
What is Dragon Dance?
Dragon Dance is a brave local performing art dedicated to Kunchi at the nationally famous Nagasaki Suwa Shrine.
Its brave and exotic dance is unparalleled in other regions and is well known nationwide.
Dragon dance is said to have originated in China as a rain-making ritual to pray for a good harvest, and has become an indispensable part of annual events and commemorative festivals in China.
The dragon dance of Nagasaki was originally imported from China, and there are records of people participating in the Suwa Shrine shrine festival as early as the Kyoho era (approximately 250 years ago). The townspeople of Ichimotokamachi received instruction from Chinese people, and over the course of more than XNUMX years, their dancing became extremely skillful, and they have come to display a skillful performance unique to Japan.
The performers are made up of one ``Jade Master'', 10 ``Ryushu'', and ``Ryubayashi'' who play gora, taiko, dragon sounding trumpets, etc., and they wear Chinese costumes. To the unique musical accompaniment, the dragon, which is 20 meters long, is danced and manipulated as if it were alive, combining techniques such as ``tama-wisher'', ``tama-kakushi'', and ``body-crossing''.
Dragon dance is a local performing art unique to Nagasaki with a rich exotic atmosphere.
In 54, it was selected as a national intangible cultural property as the Nagasaki Kunchi dedication dance.
