Number of foreign visitors to Japan (estimated as of April 2024)
August: 2,933,000 people, the seventh consecutive month of record highs
<Press release materials>
- The number of foreign visitors to Japan in August was 8, up 2,933,000% from the same month last year and 36.0% from the same month in 2019, marking the seventh consecutive month of record highs for the same month.
- Although there were some impacts from flight cancellations due to Typhoon No. 7, there was an increase in demand for travel to Japan due to school holidays, as in the previous month, and the number of foreign visitors to Japan from China in East Asia, Singapore and India in Southeast Asia, and the United States in Europe, the United States, Australia, and the Middle East increased compared to the same month last year, which was a factor pushing up the figure this month.
- Of the 23 markets, 17 (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, India, Australia, the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Middle East) recorded their highest August sales ever, with Italy and Spain also recording their highest single-month sales ever.
- The 3th Tourism Nation Promotion Basic Plan, formulated in March last year, outlines three pillars: ``sustainable tourism,'' ``increase in spending,'' and ``promotion of attracting tourists to regional areas.'' New government goals have been set, and in order to achieve them, we will closely analyze market trends and work on strategic tourism promotions to Japan.
