The Minami-Yamate district of Nagasaki City is a settlement area similar to Higashi-Yamate, and was primarily used as a residential area. It is located on a hill with a great view overlooking Nagasaki Bay.
mainlyAs an area where buildings and structures built during the time of the settlement came together to form a historic townscape.The area covered by the conservation area includes most of the hilly Minami-Yamate Town, as well as parts of the coastal Ozone and Matsugaeda Towns.
To the north of Minami-Yamate are Oura Cathedral and the former Rajon Seminary, and to the south, Western-style houses from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period, including the former Glover House, the former Ringer House, and the former Orto House, still exist. . In Matsugaeda Town, the former Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Nagasaki Branch and the former Nagasaki Customs House, Nagaramatsu Branch, are located facing the port. These representative buildings have been designated as national treasures and important cultural properties.
The area south of the center of the district is still a quiet residential area, with many Western-style residential buildings from the early to mid-Meiji period (1868-1912) still intact.
The townscape of Minami-Yamate, Nagasaki City is highly valuable, as it retains a historical townscape that shows the land division of the settlement, as well as a group of early Western-style houses.
