Fukusaiji Temple

Fukusaiji Temple
A temple characterized by the ``Bankoku Mausoleum Nagasaki Kannon'' that watches over the city of Nagasaki

This is the temple where Ryoma stayed with Kaishu for about 40 days. There is also an episode where Ryoma and Kaishu had a sumo match on the grounds of this temple.

Fukusaiji Temple has a huge Kannon statue as its symbol. It is a venerable temple of the Obaku sect, which together with Kofuku-ji, Shofuku-ji, and Sofuku-ji, is called ``Nagasaki Shifuku-ji.'' It is said to have been one of the largest Toji temples in Nagasaki, and before the war it was designated as a specially protected building, which is now a national treasure.
However, it was destroyed by the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki. Today, the Bankoku Mausoleum Nagasaki Kannon, built to pray for the repose of the souls of the atomic bomb victims and war dead, quietly overlooks the city of Nagasaki.

I am.

Shofukuji Hojo is said to be the place where the "Irohamaru Incident" meeting was held between the Kishu clan and the Tosa clan (Kaientai) led by Sakamoto Ryoma at the end of the Edo period. For this reason, the "Sakamoto Ryoma Statue" was donated by volunteers in 2020. This is a must-see for Sakamoto Ryoma fans.

Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture
Let's learn using all five senses! History and culture of overseas exchange in early modern Nagasaki

A unique hands-on museum built on the site of the Nagasaki Magistrate's Office, which Ryoma often visited.
During my trip with Kaishu, I visited there to investigate. Some of the stairs and stone steps in the current magistrate's office date back to that time. The historic building called Nagasaki Magistrate's Office has been restored and exhibited in the Nagasaki Suwa Forest where it was located during the Edo period.

The theme of the museum is "History of Overseas Exchange in Early Modern Nagasaki." It houses and exhibits approximately 400 valuable historical materials, arts and crafts, and ancient documents that tell the history of overseas exchange spanning approximately 81,000 years, and is a research base for Nagasaki studies.

The ``Statue of Ryoma Sakamoto'' that stands next to the shrine is the original model for the ``Statue of Ryoma Sakamoto'' in Kazagashira Park, and was relocated from the ruins of Kameyama Shrine in 2009. It was built in the Nagasaki settlement after the opening of the country at the end of the Edo period, and is known as the oldest existing church in Japan. It is a Gothic-style church with beautiful stained glass that faces Minami-Yamate Glover Street.

In March of the following year after its completion at the end of 1864, the Hidden Christians of Urakami visited and confessed their faith, making it the stage for a ``discovery of believers'' unprecedented in the history of world religions. This church was dedicated to the 3 Japanese saints who were martyred just before its construction, and the front of the cathedral faces Nishizaka, the site of the martyrdom.

Glover Garden

Glover Garden
Experience the spectacular view of Nagasaki Port that even great figures were fascinated by!

This is an exotic place where six Meiji-era Western-style buildings that were scattered around the city have been relocated and restored, mainly the residence of Thomas Glover, who was close friends with Ryoma, the former Glover residence, the former Ringer residence, and the former Orto residence. It is one of Nagasaki's most popular tourist spots, full of emotion. Located on a hill in Minami-Yamate overlooking the panoramic view of Nagasaki Port, the stone pavements and stone steps that retain traces of the settlement era further enhance the atmosphere of history and culture. Every part of the park is decorated with flowers, and no matter where you look, it's always a picturesque space.

We also boast a great location overlooking Nagasaki Port with Mt. Inasa, a landmark of Nagasaki City, in the background. It is no wonder that the great people who lived there right after the opening of the port were fascinated by this spectacular view.

[Lunch] Historical restaurant Kagetsu
A historical restaurant that has been loved by writers, writers and artists since the end of the Edo period as a social gathering place for international people.

Kagetsu began in 1818 when it was built as a tea house in the garden of Hiketaya, a long-established store in Nagasaki's Maruyama red light district.

Maruyama was a social gathering place for international people who were active during the turbulent period from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period, and was visited by many writers and artists such as Rai Sanyo, and has been featured in poems and prints.
There is the Dragon Room, where the scars of Ryoma Sakamoto's sword can be seen on the pillars, and the Harusame Room, which is Japan's first Western-style room that combines Japanese and Western style, with a tiled floor, Japanese-style coffered ceiling, and windows that incorporate Chinese style. It still retains its original appearance, including the ``Moon Room,'' which overlooks the Japanese garden that Kaishu Katsu loved.

Dejima
Travel back in time to the beginning of the 19th century! Nationally designated historic site “Dejima Waran Trading Post Ruins”

It is said that Ryoma often visited Dejima for trade. It is an artificial island built by order of the Tokugawa shogunate. Completed in 1636, it has played a major role in the modernization of Japan as Japan's only window to Western Europe for about 200 years.

Currently, in addition to exhibiting rooms that model life in the Edo period and materials unearthed during excavations, you can also enjoy dining in a Western-style building that remains from the Meiji era and seasonal events, making it a popular tourist base representing Nagasaki. I am collecting.

You can enjoy a stylish experience by participating in a guided tour led by historical staff dressed as gatekeepers, or by renting a kimono and taking photos with the retro cityscape in the background.
